There’s nothing quite like a warm, creamy, rich cup of hot chocolate—especially when you’re on your period. But most store-bought mixes are loaded with refined sugar and processed ingredients that can actually make PMS symptoms worse. That’s why I created the best period hot chocolate recipe: it’s delicious, comforting, and packed with nutrients that support your body during your cycle.

This is a healthier hot chocolate recipe made with real cacao, a touch of natural sweetness from maple syrup, and optional collagen for added hormone and skin support. It’s easy to make, customizable to your taste, and best of all—it actually helps. Once you try it, you might find yourself making it all month long, not just during “shark week”. In fact, this was a staple snack all throughout my pregnancy! It was perfect to help curb those constant cravings for a sweet treat.

A few years ago, I struggled with intense period pain—so bad that I relied on over-the-counter pain meds for days just to get through it. But as I leaned into a more natural lifestyle, I began looking for ways to manage my symptoms through nutrition. That’s when I discovered the incredible power of real, whole foods—especially ingredients like cacao, rich in magnesium and antioxidants.

Making nourishing recipes like this period hot chocolate recipe with cacao has been a game-changer. It’s helped me balance my hormones, ease cramps, calm my irritability, and even reduce hormonal acne. This healthy dark chocolate hot cocoa recipe is more than just a treat—it’s part of my monthly self-care ritual, and I hope it becomes part of yours too.

Is Hot Chocolate Good to Drink on Your Period?

Few people know that drinking hot chocolate can be very beneficial for helping ease the discomfort that periods bring. However, not all hot chocolate recipes are equal. My period hot chocolate contains cacao, which is rich in magnesium. Magnesium can help ease muscle cramps, reduce irritability, and support better sleep—all common PMS struggles. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and has mood-boosting benefits.

Paired with a mineral-rich sweetener like maple syrup and a dash of salt for electrolyte balance, this becomes more than just a cozy treat—it’s a PMS-fighting powerhouse.

Period Hot Chocolate Ingredients

Cacao powder– ensure you are getting cacao rather than just cocoa powder. Cacao is less processed and retains more nutrients

Collagen– not only does this provide extra protein and skin support, but it also makes the hot chocolate richer and creamier

Salt– I love using mineral salt to add more nutrients and help bring out more flavor in the drink

Vanilla extract– make sure you choose a high quality vanilla for the best taste.

Pure maple syrup– people often get confused on the difference between pancake syrup and maple syrup. Be sure you are using pure maple syrup to enjoy the benefits of an unrefined sugar with minerals.

Milk of choice– I prefer using raw whole milk, which provides healthy fats and protein, but I have also made this recipe with almond milk and it is delicious.

How to Make Hot Chocolate for Your Period

Step 1: Steam or heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave until warm (not boiling). I prefer to microwave the milk in a glass container in two 45-second bursts, and stirring in between.

Step 2: In your mug, add the cacao, collagen (if using), salt, vanilla, and maple syrup, and small amount of milk. Quickly whisk or froth together, creating a thick sauce mixture.

Step 3: Slowly pour in the rest of the warm milk while continuing to whisk until smooth and frothy.

Step 4: Enjoy the benefits of this healthy hot chocolate recipe.

What Should I Eat on My Period?

When you’re on your period, your body needs extra nourishment and support. Focusing on nutrient-dense, whole foods can help balance hormones, reduce bloating, and ease cramps. One of the best things you can add to your routine is a period hot chocolate recipe with cacao. Cacao is rich in magnesium and iron—two minerals that are often depleted during menstruation. Pairing it with a naturally sweetened hot chocolate made with maple syrup and a pinch of salt supports mineral balance and can help reduce fatigue and mood swings. If you’re craving comfort, a healthier hot chocolate recipe like this one can give you all the cozy vibes without the added sugar crash.

What Are the Best PMS-Fighting Foods?

The best PMS-fighting foods are those that stabilize blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and replenish key nutrients. Leafy greens, sweet potatoes, wild-caught salmon, and foods rich in omega-3s and magnesium are all powerful options. But don’t overlook the power of a healthy period hot chocolate recipe. Cacao is not only rich in antioxidants, but it also boosts serotonin levels, making it a natural mood enhancer. By making a healthy hot chocolate recipe that’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup and packed with real, unprocessed ingredients, you’re indulging in a treat that actually supports your body. Add collagen for extra skin and joint benefits during this time of hormonal shifts.

Hot Chocolate for Cramps

To ease period pain naturally, it’s essential to nourish your body with the right foods and drinks. Anti-inflammatory ingredients like ginger, turmeric, and magnesium-rich cacao can make a huge difference. A warm, comforting healthy hot chocolate recipe with cacao is one of my favorite ways to calm cramps and ease tension. Unlike sugary store-bought mixes, this healthier hot chocolate recipe is free from artificial ingredients that can increase inflammation in the body and lead to heightened period discomfort. It’s a simple, delicious way to support your body while enjoying something that feels indulgent. Add a pinch of salt and use your favorite milk for added electrolytes and hydration.

If you’d like to boost your period hot chocolate to provide even more relief from cramps, consider adding a dash of ginger and turmeric to this recipe. Not to mention, this can add an additional delicious depth of flavor!
