There’s something timeless and comforting about a bowl of homemade tomato soup. It’s cozy, nourishing, and the perfect way to bring warmth to your table without spending hours in the kitchen. This version is an easy tomato soup recipe made with simple pantry staples and a nourishing base of bone broth, giving it both depth of flavor and a boost of nutrition.

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Tomato Soup

  • Pantry-Friendly: Chances are, you already have everything you need on hand—no special grocery trips required.
  • Nourishing & Satisfying: Bone broth adds minerals, protein, and richness, making this soup more filling than store-bought versions.
  • Customizable: If you prefer a creamier soup or find tomatoes too acidic, a splash of cream smooths everything out perfectly.
  • Thick, Not Watery: This recipe blends together into a silky soup that still has body and flavor.

Tips & Tricks for Success

Easy tomato soup ingedients
  • Blend Smooth or Leave Chunky: For a silky texture, blend your soup until smooth with an immersion blender or regular blender. If you love a little more rustic feel, pulse only a few times to leave some texture.
  • Add the Cream: If you prefer a soup that is slightly less acidic, add a splash of cream. Start with a small splash and add more until it tastes just right for you.
  • Make Ahead: This soup keeps well in the fridge for 3–4 days and tastes even better the next day
  • Make it Gluten Free: Swap the all purpose flour for a gluten free flour blend.

How To Make Easy Homemade Tomato Soup

Step 1: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter on medium heat.

Step 2: Add in the onion and garlic for 3-5 minutes until the onion is soft.

Step 3: Whisk in the flour continuously for 1 minute.

Step 4: Add tomato sauce and broth. Then stir in basil, Italian seasoning, and sugar. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 5: Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 6: Spoon out into bowls and add a small splash of organic heavy whipping cream and top with fresh basil  if desired.

What to Serve with Homemade Tomato Soup

While a grilled cheese sandwich may be the classic partner, there are so many cozy sides that pair perfectly with this homemade tomato soup:

  • Sourdough Grilled Cheese – The ultimate dunking companion with its tangy crust and melty cheese center.
  • Fresh Salad – A simple green salad with a honey mustard vinaigrette balances the richness of the soup.
  • Roasted Vegetables – Try roasted carrots, broccoli, or sweet potatoes for extra nourishment.
  • Herbed Crackers or Breadsticks – Perfect for dipping, especially if you love extra crunch.
  • Avocado Toast – Creamy avocado on toast makes a wholesome, filling side.
  • Protein Additions – Add shredded chicken, chickpeas, or a boiled egg for a heartier meal.

This makes your easy tomato soup versatile enough for a quick lunch, cozy weeknight dinner, or even a light appetizer when hosting.

Homemade Tomato Soup (Easy & Nourishing)

This homemade tomato soup is nourishing, never watery, and made with pantry staples and bone broth. Pair it with sourdough grilled cheese for the ultimate comfort food.
Cook Time 16 minutes minutes
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 Onion small, diced fine
  • 2 garlic cloves diced finely
  • 2 Tbsp all purpose fluor
  • 2 cans organic tomato sauce
  • 1 container chicken bone broth 14.5 oz
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon cane sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional

  • organic heavy cream
  • fresh basil

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter on medium heat.
  • Add in the onion and garlic for 3-5 minutes until the onion is soft.
  • Whisk in the flour continuously for 1 minute. Add tomato sauce and broth. Then stir in basil, Italian seasoning, and sugar. Season with salt.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • I stop here, but for a smoother soup, you can blend the onions and garlic with an immersion blender. If you choose to use a blender, make sure you allow the soup to cool first.
  • Spoon out into bowls and add a small splash of organic heavy whipping cream and top with fresh basil if desired.

Notes

  • Gluten-Free: swap the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free flour blend
  • Blend Smooth or Leave Chunky: For a silky texture, blend your soup until smooth with an immersion blender or regular blender. If you love a little more rustic feel, pulse only a few times to leave some texture.
  • Add the Cream: If you prefer a soup that is slightly less acidic, add a splash of cream. Start with a small splash and add more until it tastes just right for you.
  • Make Ahead: This soup keeps well in the fridge for 3–4 days and tastes even better the next day as the flavors deepen.

Conclusion

This homemade tomato soup is proof that comfort food doesn’t need to be complicated. With wholesome ingredients, a touch of cream if you’d like, and the nourishing boost of bone broth, it’s a simple recipe that can become a weeknight staple. Don’t forget to pair it with something delicious. My favorite is the sourdough grilled cheese—because some pairings are just classics for a reason.
